And so this morning the announcement came. Worried that his base was about to desert him (following the rest of the country) , Bush nominated a man sometimes referred to as "Scalito" . Samuel Alito, a red boy from the blue state of New Jersey, is Bush's answer to the Miers backlash. Conservatives are rallying around the idea of a nominee who has on the record anti-choice decisions. And their answer to critics who say the President should have taken this opportunity to nominate another woman or the first Hispanic to the court, "doesn't Alito sound Hispanic enough" (not actual quote, but google Alito and hispanic and you'll see what I mean).

Now the question is, will the Democrats (who seem more than content to let the Republican party to self implode) be able to rise to the challenge?

Sweet Retribution (A Week That Made History)

Rosa Parks- The Civil Rights activist dies at 92 years old. She outlived many of the other major players identified with the civil rights movement (even though she was already 42 when she made her mark by refusing to give up her seat to a white man). The woman who fought to end racial segregation . . . who 50 years ago was considered a second class citizen, is now the first woman who's body will lie in state at the Capitol Rotunda. A half a century after she had to drink from a seperate water fountain, she is honored in a way usually reserved for presidents and war heroes.
Link

Scooter Libby- The administration known for its lack of accountability is finally forced to hold itself accountable. Now I feel like a little kid screaming "I want, I want, I want" . . . but I want Karl Rove's head handed over on a stick and paraded through the streets of New York. Libby being indicted is not enough. I just have to believe that every once in a while people truly get what they deserve. And I just think that Rove being the downfall of the president that he created would be such sweet irony. That being said Libby is the first high ranking White House official to be criminally charged in decades.
Link

Miers Withdrawal- The conservatives revolt against their chosen one. When democrats have a problem with a Bush nominee it's not really an issue (hell, what can they really do about it?). When Bush's base comes out against something, that's when shit gets done. Bush nominates an unqualified crony . . . the real problem? She used to be a democrat and despite being promised by Rove that she will vote to overturn Roe v Wade, the god squad is not convinced that the 60 year old swinging single won't pull another 180.
Link

Drugs Are Bad Mmmm 'kay . . . but not that bad

According to recent reports . . . So Im sitting with my friend Roger in a class about methods to ease tension and center yourself (sample dialogue "put your hands across your chest in anyway that it feels comfortable to you . . . feel what it feels like to touch yourself" . . . cue uncontrollable snickering). At one point I snuck a quick look at my cell phone to see that I had a text message from a friend of mine at NBC reading "Want to see SNL tonight? Get back to me ASAP". So I grabbed Roger and hightailed it out of there (probably totally throwing off the balance of everyone's chi . . . or something). So hours later (after picking up the computer guy in the torrential rain and getting my computer fixed) there I am in the front row at SNL literally feet away from all of the action. If I had raised my hand during weekend update it would have been in Tina Fey's shot. During the commercials I had to tuck in my feet to make sure that the set pieces did not get rolled over it. Now for someone who's always dreamed of directing SNL (I heart Beth McCarthy Miller) his was not just going to some show taping, it was like a religious experience. I mean when it comes to live television production Saturday Night Live is the big leagues. It was awesome to see just how coordinated everything is . . . I mean as soon as the camera is off of something or someone they are prepping for the next thing. The funniest part was watching Catherine Zeta Jones get literally pulled around the studio by her handler.
So of all nights to get to see Saturday Night Live it is right before the only Sunday where I have to wake up at 7:30 in the morning. I got about three hours of sleep before having to wake up to walk in the Alzheimers Associations Memory Walk. Having lost my great aunt to Alzheimer's within the past couple of years it was both a really sad and really cathardic experience for me. After I got done with the three mile walk I went downtown to kill some time before work. Caught the movie "Good Night and Good Luck" which I thought was really good. I thought that the movie was really well done and David Strathairn did a great job. As someone who went to Edward R. Murrow High School I have seen a lot of Murrow in my day and I went into the movie thinking that Strathairn looked nothing like him. This is the result of years of negative image build-up that card playing and gambling are evil pursuits. Rummikub® on the other hand, is a purely numbered tile game with no images of kings & queens, etc. Rummikub® promotes calm, release of tension, and is considered by millions of lay men and women around the world, as socially relaxing and interactive play for all ages. Also clergymen and clergywomen of many denominations enjoy this peaceful and enjoyable game. Some even call it "heavenly," as it encourages goodwill and good feelings among those playing the game, to the soothing sound of the clicking Rummikub® tiles. At War During the Gulf War, while Sadam Hussein's deadly screaming scuds re-entered the atmosphere, gas masked Israeli children, women and men, played Rummikub® to dispel the tension and fear. In 1996 as katyusha missiles slammed into the town of Kiriat Shmona, people of all ages sat in their bomb shelters and played Rummikub® and found it to be a true tranquilizer. The only after-effects were that many found the game to be habit forming, and continued playing Rummikub® even after the sirens announced the all clear. Danger Pirates Bruce and Annelie Guertheim of Germany were pleasure sailing on their private yacht in the North Sea, about 100 kilometers off the German coast. Suddenly, Bruce (52) noticed a boat rapidly approaching the yacht. Bruce was sure that something mechanical was wrong in the boat, and he tried to maneuver out of the path of the oncoming vessel, but did not succeed, and the boat came alongside the yacht. Before the Guertheims understood what was happening, men on the boat extended a 10 meter long plank onto the yacht's deck and quickly boarded the private yacht. "This is a robbery," said a man in English, and said: "hand over all of your valuables." The pirates took with them Dm 3,000. in cash, Annelie's jewelry, a TV, stereo, and a Rummikub® set, and rushed back to their boat after smashing the radio, and disappeared quickly northward. Police of various countries bordering the North Sea, have been investigating similar incidents for many weeks, as the German couple were not the only ones to lose their valuable possessions; especially Rummikub®. Hollywood celebrities who enjoy playing Rummikub® are: Elisabeth Taylor, Don Rickles, Bob Newhart, the late Telly Savalas, and many others.

Jane Goes Bye Bye

Am I the only one who is very upset by the departure of Jane Pratt from Jane Magazine? Now some might argue that the album has already come out . . after all an earlier version of the record was leaked a couple of months ago and downloaded by thousands upon thousands of people. The album has been played on the radio and even reviewed in a couple of major magazines and newspapers. A campaign, Free Fiona, was launched at the beginning of the year to encourage Sony to take the damn thing off the shelf. Free Fiona started off with just a couple of seemingly insignificant protests, but was able to gain enough press attention that word began to spread. And now all of the waiting will finally pay off. Now that the album is officially coming out, this means something even more exciting, a tour!

Now of course not everything is well and good. Something curious about the release announcement sent to my inbox is the omittance of Jon Brion's name. Apparently they retooled the whole album with a new producer. According to the AP, Fiona has turned down all interview requests. She was silent through the whole release debate and now that there is a date set she remains so. Now, Fiona is not exactly one who plays the pr game when it comes to interviews. She seems to be uncontrollably honest, so maybe it is the case of , if you dont have anything nice to say. However, chances are that whenever she does give an interview we will find out at least part of the story.

Links: Free Fiona
Official Website

End Note: In the release Fiona does say: "Now that my album is finally finished, I am very, very excited to have people hear what we did – I am so proud of it, and all of us who worked on it."

Prisoners Love Potter

Guantanamo Bay Prisoners are apparently jumping on to the latest craze http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20050809/ts_nm/security_guantanamo_potter_dc

Secession

Forwarded by email:

For those of you NOT in California - California periodically has
thoughts of going it alone. The letters about it are usually humorous
and insightful. Just thought I'd share this one with the rest of you.

We're ticked off at the way you've treated California, and we've
decided we're leaving. We intend to form our own country, and we're
taking the other Blue States with us.

In case you aren't aware, that includes Hawaii, Oregon,
Washington, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois and all the
Northeast. We blieve this split will be beneficial to the nation, and
especially to the people of the new country of New California.

To sum up briefly: You get Texas, Oklahoma, Ohio and all the
slave states.

** We get stem cell research. You get the rhythm system.
We get Elliot Spitzer. You get Ken Lay.
We get the Statue of Liberty. You get OpryLand.
We get Intel and Microsoft. You get WorldCom.
We get Harvard. You get Ole' Miss.
We get 85 percent of America's venture capital and
entrepreneurs. You get Alabama.
We get two-thirds of the tax revenue. You get to make the red
states pay their fair share.

Since our aggregate divorce rate is 22 percent lower than the
Christian Coalition's, we get a bunch of happy families. You get
a bunch of single moms.

Please be aware that Nuevo California will be pro-choice and
antiwar, and we're going to want all our citizens back from Iraq at
once. If you need people to fight, ask your evangelicals. They have
kids they're apparently willing to send to their deaths for no
purpose, and they don't care if you don't show pictures of their
children's caskets coming home. We wish you success in Iraq, and
hope that the WMDs turn up, but we're not willing to spend our
resources in Bush's Quagmire.

With the Blue States in hand, we will have firm control of 80
percent of the country's fresh water, more than 90 percent of the
pineapple and lettuce, 92 percent of the nation's fresh fruit, 95
percent of America's quality wines (you can serve French wines at
state dinners) 90 percent of all cheese, 90 percent of the high tech
industry, most of the U.S. low-sulfur coal, all living redwoods,
sequoias and condors, all the Ivy and Seven-Sister schools, including
Princeton, Harvard, Yale, Stanford, CalTech and MIT.

With the Red States, on the other hand, you will have to cope
with 88 percent of all obese Americans (and their projected health
care costs), 92 percent of all U.S. mosquitoes, nearly 100 percent of
the tornadoes, 90 percent of the hurricanes, 99 percent of all
Southern Baptists, virtually 100 percent of all televangelists, Rush
Limbaugh, Bob Jones University, Clemson and the University of
Georgia.

We get Hollywood and Yosemite, thank you.

Additionally, 38 percent of those in the Red states believe
Jonah was actually swallowed by a whale, 62 percent believe life is
sacred unless we're discussing the death penalty or gun laws, 44
percent say that evolution is only a theory, 53 percent that Saddam
was involved in 9/11 and 61 percent of you crazies believe you are
people with higher morals than we lefties.

Sincerely,

Author Unknown in New California.

Current (aka Al Gore's New Revolution)

If you haven't checked out Current TV already, then go to it. The network itself isnt bad, although there are a couple of rough elements; Im personally not digging the time bar on the bottom of the screen and most of the "VJ's" really suck. However, if you can suffer through the lame writing and the cheesy vj's then the video content itself is by far some of the most interesting stuff that I've seen on tv in a while.

Fight the MTA

I wish that there was some way for New Yorkers to effectively boycott the MTA. I mean c'mon, it just seems like they are getting a little bit ridiculous. All they do is complain about not having enough money. Then in the last couple of weeks we learn that they have only spent a miniscule portion of the money allocated to them by the federal government for counterterrorism, and that all of a sudden they have a surplus this year of <a href="http://www.nynewsday.com/news/local/transportation/subway/nyc-mta0729,0,99249.story?coll=nyc-homepage-breaking2"target="_blank">833 million. Here are a couple of thoughts for the week.

- Fox News is still on the air? Bill O Reilly's name popped up in an article that I was reading and my first thought was "oh yeah . . . i forgot about him"

- Is there anything more obnoxious then being the sober one in a room full of drunk people?

- <a href="http://www.newyorkmetro.com/"target="_blank">New York magazine rocks! (but there crossword puzzle this week was way too easy).

- Um . . . I never thought I'd say this but <a href="http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=514&e=4&u=/ap/20050729/ap_on_go_co/frist_stem_cells"target="_blank">Go Bill Frist!!

- If you didn't catch the article a couple of weeks ago in the New York Times Magazine on <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2005/07/17/magazine/17DEMOCRATS.html?ex=1122868800&en=37774d14999455fe&ei=5070"target="_blank">Political Framing, then I would definitely recommend you check it out.

Donkey Race

What's the point of a debate if candidates stick to their talking points? Watching the democratic candidates for mayor of NY speak it occurs to me that I could probably play out the whole thing in my head and they don't really need to clear the time on their busy calender.

Gifford Miller: im the only one who fights the mayor every day . . . smaller class sizes . . . blah blah blah

Anthony Weiner: if you want someone who isnt traditional and fights for the middle class . . .

C. Virginia Fields: i would form a commission . . . and oh yeah, affordable housing

Fernando Ferrar: (smug look) Listen . . . (answers different question then the one asked)

Rinse and repeat

It's like a broken record and thats why noone cares. Nowadays everyone speaks for the soundbite. If I have to hear one more time Miller's story about the teacher who prays for the flu . . . then I might just vomit (i can't promise anything too extreme since I know that I will hear it again). If you ask me then the only candidate here is Anthony Weiner . . . but then again what do I know since the rest of the city seems to be unsure of who he is. I think that he actually has some really good ideas, but when he speaks we only seem to get a glimpse because he is too busy sticking to the script. Personalitywise he seems a bit rough around the edges, but he is a man of real ideas. On the other hand the other candidates all rub me the wrong way. Im scared at even the thought of Ferrar being mayor, I just really don't trust him. Fields seems like a good person but I don't think that she has a very broad vision. I agree with alot of what Miller says, but again there seems to be something not quite right there. I don't think that its just that he seems young and kind of green. Someone said to me once that he is overambitious . . . which I don't necessarily think is a bad thing . . . but its almost in a underhanded, do anything to work your way to the top type of way. If I had to choose a democratic candidate then it would be Bill Thompson. Although who knows what would happen if the race actually played out, I just think Thompson seems like a really smart, honest, good person. He seems like someone that I could really get behind and believe in (not just a wooden caricature of every other politician). If Bloomberg does win then I think Thompson is a good bet for our next mayor.

As far as Bloomberg goes my feelings on him are all over the place. I think that he has done a great job of getting the city back on its feet. He seems a champion of the arts and actually appears to want New York to be a better place for people (although I dont know about the way that he goes about it sometimes). However, on the other hand, his tendency to lean towards bigger business (Walmart, etc) and the amount of money that he is spending on this election really dont sit right. Another four years of Bloomberg sometimes gives me visions of New York City starting to look more like New Jersey with big box stores and tons of stadiums. My hope is that if there are another four years of Bloomberg then the balances of government will off set any of those issues (as Silver did with the West Side Stadium) . That being said, the thought of placing a vote on the republican line really pains me.

Questions of the month:

1. I think that Johnny Depp is one of the best actors around
2. I know alot of people who are obsessed with Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory, and while I enjoy it and think that it is a classic . . . i wouldnt list it as one of my favorite films.

That being said . . . if you are thinking about spending 10 dollars to see this film, rent the original and save your money. I, for the most part, enjoyed the beginning of the film. Its the same old story, Charlie is from a poor family, he wants to get the golden ticket so he can go visit the Wonka chocolate factory, it seems unlikely that he is going to get it, but the film would have no point if he didn't . . . so of course he does. It was cheesy, but I got that they were going for a classic film feel so it worked. I enjoyed Charlies family (played by a pretty excellent cast of actors) and the introductions to all of the other golden ticket winners. But literally the moment that we first see Willy Wonka/Johnny Depp on screen I almost completely lost interest. They didn't do nearly enough to seperate it from the first film and the few things that they did do different seemed to fall flat. The whole thing was pretty bland. This is exactly the opposite of what I would expect from a film directed by Tim Burton, starring Johnny Depp, based on a story by Raold Dahl. In fact, I would expect it to be one of the most interesting, entertaining films ever made. I am not exaggerating when I say that halfway through the film my mind began to wonder to what I would be doing later that night. I think that Johnny Depp's interpretation of Willy Wonka was just plain annoying. Even if Gene Wilder hadn't played the character to perfection, the portrayal would still be pretty bad.

One thing that I did like about the film was the Oompa Loompa's. I know that alot of people did not like that they were all played by one person, but I thought it was pretty great. Deep Roy had great facial expressions and really pulled it off. I also found the Oompa Loompa songs to be entertainingly ridiculous!

Good things: some really well delivered and funny lines, Freddy Highmore, Noah Taylor, Helena Bonham Carter and the rest of the actors playing Charlie's family, Deep Roy.

Bad Things: Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka, some of the special effects, bland storytelling, might as well see Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

Supreme Diversion

Bush announced his supreme court pick tonight just as momentum for the Rove controversy has begun to reach full speed. (I know this isnt the Clinton years, but we need to make this story sexier somehow) While the right side seems poised to fall apart at the seams (does it seem like Ken Mehlman is the only guy the Republicans have to defend them on the talking heads shows?) . . . the Democrats might actually be doing something unbelievable . . . taking full advantage of the chance to restore their credibility in the eyes of the American public. Now it is a bit sad that something like this had to happen for people to wake up and see just how underhanded the administration is . . . but the way I see it the better late then never. Hopefully this is setting the stage for a Democratic or centrist (Mccain?) Republican president the next go around. Speaking of which the thought entered my head the other day . . . would I rather have Guiliani or Pataki as president? In a time where so much in the world seems so off kilter, the show actually encourages people to step back and take a look at things. Not just to take things at face value, but actually to deconstruct them. It's funny when you can see how conscious they are of their success. It seemed like they wanted to make out with themselves everytime they told a joke . . . it was great.

Other shows I can't get enough of:
<a href="http://www.fxnetworks.com/shows/originals/30days/main.html"target="_blank" >30 Days
<a href="http://www.sho.com/site/ptbs/home.do"target="_blank" >Penn and Teller: Bullshit!

Well, What Do We Have Here

Alright, so while I grimace at the thought of inviting people to "check out my blog" . . . it seems that I am jumping onto the latest bandwagon. Ive decided to do so for two reasons (neither of them being an urgent need for people to see how witty I am, although Im sure that will happen on occasion) . . .

reason 1. Without any classroom type setting in the last few years I have had the desire to write but rarely have the motivation to do so
reason 2. Occasionally I find interesting little tidbits, articles, websites, etc that I feel the obligation to share with others . . . and people can only handle so many forwards

In beginning this adventure, I would like to give a shout out to Rick for being my blog guru (especially since he will probably be the only one reading it). If you have read his blog before then you might recognize me as "a friend from work" or "some girl I know". While my name might be curiously omitted from his postings, I am confident I remain his greatest source of inspiration.

godspeed
